Nurse struck off after betting when patient would die

A hospice nurse, Naomi Butcher, has been struck off the nursing register after a Fitness to Practise hearing found misconduct and impaired fitness to practise.
The tribunal described her remarks about Traveller families as discriminatory, marking them as unacceptable, degrading and unprofessional.
Butcher allegedly bet colleagues that a patient would die on Christmas Day and later refused a Traveller family's visiting request.
A tenfold overdose of Midazolam was administered, with false documentation claiming the correct dosage had been given.
The tribunal found her actions would have caused emotional and psychological distress to the Traveller family.
The panel warned that the misconduct breached fundamental standards of professional conduct and described it as a grave breach with limited insight.
Butcher resigned in March 2024 amid ongoing concerns, and was working in other roles before the formal strike-off.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) was notified of the conduct, with referral occurring in April of the following year.
