DC Bureau Environment USDA to give up massive DC office building as shift of staff to states begins

USDA will vacate the South Building and shrink its Washington footprint, moving toward regional hubs by end of 2026.
The department plans to reduce D.C., Maryland and Virginia staffing from about 4,600 to around 2,000.
Regional hubs will be established in Raleigh, Kansas City, Indianapolis, Fort Collins, and Salt Lake City as part of the shift.
The move is intended to root out waste, fraud and abuse and rebalance the real estate footprint.
Staff currently in the Virginia office will relocate to Washington, D.C., as part of the transition.
USDA will maintain some administrative locations and service centers in selected cities during the transition.
South Building’s future use remains unclear as the process unfolds with stakeholder consultation.
GSA will lead asset transfers but did not provide a fixed timetable beyond a two-year window remaining in the administrator’s tenure.
The USDA plans to relocate thousands of workers while completing the transition by year-end 2026.
Sen. Joni Ernst welcomed the plan, suggesting Iowa as a relocation target.
