Boulder County extends direct cash assistance program

Boulder County votes to extend its direct cash assistance program for 15 months starting January, doubling monthly support for current families.
Funding for the extension comes from interest earned on the county's American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The program targets families with at least one child under four, earning no more than 30% of the area median income.
The original two-year pilot began in July 2024, with more than 541 families receiving $300 monthly.
Current participants are projected to receive $600 monthly during the extension to reflect rising living costs.
Officials expect about 250 families to continue qualifying, with funding to support up to 410 families overall.
The program includes optional financial counseling for participants.
The extension follows promising results from the initial group, with fewer families worrying about monthly bills.
The county previously ran a similar program, Elevate Boulder, which paid $500 monthly to 200 households over two years.
